New Delhi, May 13 : Sources indicate that the high-level committee responsible for selecting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director, consisting of the prime minister, chief justice of India, and the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, is likely to convene on Saturday evening. The committee will deliberate on either selecting the next CBI chief or granting an extension to the incumbent director, Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, whose two-year tenure is set to conclude on May 25.
Jaiswal, a senior IPS officer from the 1985 Maharashtra cadre and former commissioner of the Mumbai Police, assumed the position of CBI director on May 26, 2021.
According to the established process, the CBI director is appointed by the high-level committee comprising the prime minister, chief justice of India, and the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, for a fixed tenure of two years, which can be extended for up to five years.
