Srinagar, May 15: The night temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a decline and settled below normal, except for Banihal, as rainfall occurred in a few places and the Meteorological Department forecasted rain and thunderstorms at isolated areas in the next 24 hours, officials reported. According to a meteorological department official cited by GNS, Srinagar recorded a low of 9.6°C, 1.0°C below the normal for the summer capital, compared to the previous night’s 10.6°C.
Qazigund, considered the gateway town of Kashmir, experienced a low of 7.0°C, which was 2.2°C below the normal, in contrast to the previous night’s 10.0°C. Pahalgam, the renowned tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, recorded a low of 3.5°C, 1.6°C below the normal for the location, compared to the previous night’s 5.6°C.
The mercury in Kupwara town settled at 6.9°C, 2.7°C below the normal for the north Kashmir area, while Kokernag witnessed a low of 7.2°C, 2.1°C below normal. In the world-famous skiing resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the temperature dropped to 2.5°C, 3.0°C below normal.
Jammu, the winter capital of J&K, recorded a low of 22.6°C, 0.9°C below normal. Banihal, on the other hand, registered a low of 11.3°C, slightly above normal by 0.4°C. Batote recorded 13.4°C, 0.3°C below normal, Katra experienced 19.6°C, 0.4°C below normal, and Bhaderwah witnessed 8.0°C, 1.5°C below normal. Leh in Ladakh recorded a low of 0.2°C.
Regarding rainfall in the last 24 hours until 8:30 am today, Qazigund received 1.8mm, Pahalgam 6.5mm, Kokernag 1.3mm, Gulmarg 4.2mm, and Bhaderwah 6.8mm.
From May 15-16, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy, with a possibility of rain and thunderstorms at isolated places. The meteorological official reiterated that no major rainfall is forecasted for the next week. However, from May 17-20, rain and thunderstorms are anticipated at scattered places across the region.
