New Delhi, May 19 : Odisha has achieved a significant milestone by being awarded the second rank in the Best State category for the prestigious National Water Award, 2022. The Ministry of Jal Shakti has recognized the state’s commendable work in the field of water resources conservation and management during the period of 2020-21 and 2021-22.
One of the key accomplishments highlighted by the state is the provision of water security to over 4 lakh farmers through the creation of additional irrigation facilities spanning 3.2 lakh hectares. The Department of Water Resources successfully executed two major projects, namely the Lower Indra Irrigation Project in Nuapada and Bolangir, as well as the Upper Indravati Lift Canal Project in Kalahandi. Additionally, the state has implemented 61 mega lift irrigation projects, catering to the water needs of upland areas, along with 2833 Community Lift Irrigation Projects and 22,500 Deep Bore Wells, ensuring inclusivity across geographical and social boundaries.
Moreover, the long-standing issues pertaining to the Subarnarekha Irrigation Project have been resolved, resulting in the irrigation of approximately 32,000 hectares of land.
In a dedicated effort towards water resource conservation, the state government has committed a substantial investment of Rs. 11,700 crore over a span of five years, aiming to conserve around 50,000 hectare-meters of water. These initiatives reflect Odisha’s unwavering commitment to sustainable water management and its remarkable achievements in preserving and harnessing this vital resource.
