Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir – Srinagar is abuzz with preparations as it gets ready to host the third G20 Tourism Working Group meeting today. With the first major international event since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019, stringent security measures have been put in place to ensure a smooth and secure summit.
Kashmir has implemented a comprehensive three-tier security grid, including aerial surveillance and drone monitoring. National Security Guard (NSG) and MARCOS commandos have been deployed around the venue, while the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s special operation group (SOG) is providing security cover at strategic locations to thwart any potential threats.
The city of Srinagar has donned a festive look, with walls and roads adorned to welcome the G20 summit delegates. The people of Kashmir eagerly anticipate the event, recognizing its potential to boost the tourism and business sectors in the region.
While there are no restrictions on public movement in Srinagar, all shops and business establishments are open to warmly receive the G20 summit guests. Representatives from various sectors extend a warm welcome to the delegates, firmly believing that this summit will accelerate the overall development of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in tourism, and contribute to its economic growth.
Pakistan has consistently expressed its displeasure with New Delhi’s decision to convene the G20 Tourism Working Group conference in Kashmir. In response, India reaffirms that G20 meetings are being held across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, as they are integral parts of India.
“The meetings are being held in all parts of India; that is our natural response,” stated Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Official Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, dismissing Pakistan’s criticism during the MEA Weekly Media Briefing.
During the G20 Working Group meeting in Jammu and Kashmir, the focus will be on five key priority areas: Green Tourism, Digitalization, Skills, MSMEs, and Destination Management. The objective is to strengthen economic growth, preserve cultural heritage, and promote sustainable development in the region.
The summit will witness the participation of G20 member countries, invited nations, international organizations, and industry stakeholders, further enhancing its significance and potential impact.
