New Delhi, May 24 : Congress and 18 other opposition parties have jointly declared their boycott of the inauguration ceremony for the new Parliament building on May 28. In a joint statement, the parties expressed their dissatisfaction with the Prime Minister’s alleged disregard for democratic principles, highlighting the disqualification, suspension, and suppression of opposition MPs who raised concerns on behalf of the Indian people. They also criticized the lack of meaningful debates on controversial legislation and the diminished role of Parliamentary Committees. The opposition parties further criticized the construction of the new building during the COVID-19 pandemic without proper consultation with the public or MPs. Shiv Sena, RJD, and other parties have confirmed their participation in the boycott, emphasizing the need for course correction in the functioning of the Parliament. The inauguration event invitations were sent to various leaders, including former Speakers and Chairmen of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The CPI(M) and other parties have also announced their boycott, with CPI(M) accusing the Prime Minister of bypassing the President in the decision-making process. The Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress had previously declared their non-participation in the ceremony due to concerns over the President’s exclusion from the event. Congress sources indicate that the party is likely to join the boycott as well. The new Parliament building, aimed at addressing space constraints and enhancing efficiency, will accommodate 888 members in the Lok Sabha and is equipped with modern facilities.
