Jammu, May 29 : In Jammu and Kashmir, the much-anticipated Jambu Zoo, located near Nagrota on the outskirts of Jammu city, will open its doors to the public today, marking a significant boost to Jammu’s tourism potential.
Named after the founder of Jammu city, King Jambu Lochan, the zoo boasts impressive features, including a captivating artificial waterfall and a diverse collection of 27 renowned animal species. Visitors can expect to encounter Royal Bengal Tigers, Asiatic Lions, leopards, bears, crocodiles, and more.
Sprawling across an extensive 3200 kanals of land in the Nagrota area, along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, Jambu Zoo stands as North India’s largest zoo and has emerged as a prominent attraction for tourists traveling to Kashmir or visiting the revered Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra.
The zoo’s infrastructure has been developed over 1200 kanals, with plans for further expansion on the remaining land. To enhance the visitor experience, the zoo features an open amusement theater and a park specifically designed for children. Battery-operated vehicles are also available for convenient transportation within the premises.
This remarkable facility is expected to draw significant tourist footfall, contributing to the city’s tourism sector. To encourage visitors and promote the zoo, entry will be free for the first week.
The completion of the INR 70 crore zoo project took place in mid-May, followed by an inspection conducted by the Central Zoo Authority to facilitate registration. The Department of Wildlife of Jammu and Kashmir Government had already obtained the necessary clearances for the project.
