New Delhi, June 26 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed the government’s determination to eradicate the drug menace in India and prevent the smuggling of narcotics across the country. In a video message on the International Day Against Drug Abuse, Shah emphasized the home ministry’s zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics and highlighted the positive outcomes of this approach.
Shah expressed confidence in successfully eliminating drugs from India through coordinated efforts, aiming for a drugs-free nation. He declared that the government would not rest until this fight against drugs is won. Shah highlighted the progress made so far, citing a significant increase in cases against drug peddlers and the seizure of narcotics worth Rs 22,000 crore between 2014 and 2022—a substantial rise compared to the seizures of Rs 768 crore between 2006 and 2013.
The home minister credited the Modi government’s holistic approach, involving various government agencies working in coordination, as the key to their success against the narcotics trade. He acknowledged the continuous efforts of organizations like the Narcotics Control Bureau and highlighted the destruction of six lakh kilograms of drugs in the country since June 2022 as a testament to the government’s commitment.
Shah emphasized the importance of people’s participation in the war against narcotics and urged citizens to stay away from drugs while also keeping their families drug-free. He highlighted the detrimental effects of drugs on society and national security, urging people to report any information related to drug trafficking to the security agencies.
The home minister concluded by mentioning the establishment of the National Narcotics Coordination Portal (NCORD) in 2019 and the formation of the Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) in every state’s police department, aimed at strengthening the campaign against drugs. He called upon all citizens to actively engage in the fight against drugs, contributing to the goal of a drugs-free India.
