Srinagar, July 8: Former Union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed concern over the implementation of a uniform civil code (UCC), emphasizing its potential impact on all religions. Azad cautioned that implementing a UCC would be more challenging than revoking Article 370. He stressed that such a move would not be favorable for any government, as it would affect not only Muslims but also Christians, Sikhs, tribals, Jains, and Parsis simultaneously. Azad advised the government against considering this step, highlighting the involvement of multiple religions.
Azad, the chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), also welcomed the land-for-landless policy announced by the Jammu and Kashmir administration. However, he emphasized that the land should be given exclusively to poor residents of the Union Territory and not outsiders.
Furthermore, Azad advocated for early assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the people have been awaiting the restoration of the democratic setup. He underscored the importance of elected representatives in a democracy, as officers alone cannot effectively govern for prolonged periods.
Regarding the developments within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra, Azad expressed respect for Sharad Pawar but expressed dissatisfaction with the internal situation of the party, acknowledging that it is their internal matter.
In other news, Nazir Itoo, a former AAP leader, and his supporters joined the DPAP, and Azad warmly welcomed them into the party. Itoo had previously been associated with the PDP.
