New Delhi, July 20: The Monsoon Session of Parliament commenced on Thursday morning with Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourning till 2 pm and 12 noon, respectively, following obituary references. The Lok Sabha saw AAP leader Sushil Kumar Rinku taking oath as a member from Jalandhar, Punjab, in Punjabi.
During the session, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla paid tribute to two sitting members and 11 former members who passed away during the inter-session period. The House observed a moment of silence in their memory. Similarly, in Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Singh Dhankar read the obituary reference for sitting member Hardwar Dubey, and the House observed a solemn silence to honor departed leaders and former members.
Opposition members had submitted adjournment motion notices in both Houses, demanding discussions on various issues, including the situation in Manipur.
Ahead of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence in MPs utilizing the session to discuss matters concerning public welfare. He emphasized the significance of constructive and sharp discussions leading to better decisions for the public good.
The Prime Minister also addressed the issue of the ethnic violence in Manipur, expressing deep pain over the incident where two women were paraded naked. He assured that those responsible for the heinous act would not be spared and urged all chief ministers to tighten law and order in their states to protect women’s honor.
In total, the government has 31 bills on its agenda for the session. One of the significant bills is the Personal Data Protection Bill, which will be discussed during the proceedings.
The Monsoon Session aims to address crucial matters concerning the welfare of the nation and its people, and the government and opposition members are expected to engage in rigorous debates and discussions to arrive at the best possible outcomes for the public interest.
