Jammu, Aug 02 : On Wednesday, police sources confirmed the arrest of Muthair Ahmad Dar, a resident of Mahool village in Banihal area, Jammu, and Kashmir. He was arrested for allegedly hurting religious feelings and promoting hate.
The arrest came after a video of the youth went viral, wherein he claimed to have dreamt of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani, a revered Islamic jurist, saint, and scholar known as ‘Peer Dastgeer’ in Kashmir. In the video, the youth asserted that the saint had instructed him to advocate for the destruction of all shrines in Kashmir dedicated to Sufi saints, including the highly revered Hazratbal shrine. He claimed that Kashmiris were supposedly visiting these shrines more often than attending mosques.
The video sparked controversy, as it went against the historical teachings of local saints and Sufis, who have been instrumental in promoting coexistence and tolerance among people of different religions in Kashmir.
Various Islamic scholars and preachers questioned the authenticity of the youth’s dream and accused him of spreading falsehoods with malicious intent. Subsequently, a complaint was lodged against him at Shergarhi police station in Srinagar, leading to his arrest under sections 295 and 153-A of the Indian Penal Code.
