New Delhi, Aug 3: The government has granted a one-year extension to Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, beyond August 30, 2023, as per an order issued by the Personnel Ministry. This marks his third extension in the position. Gauba, a 1982-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Jharkhand cadre, was appointed to the top bureaucratic post in 2019 for a two-year term. Subsequently, he received one-year extensions in 2021 and August of the previous year.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Gauba’s further tenure, in relaxation of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, and Rule 56(d) of the Fundamental Rules.
Renowned as the mastermind behind the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, Gauba played a pivotal role in the division of the former state into two Union territories following the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, which granted it special status. Throughout his career, he has held crucial positions such as secretary in the Union urban development ministry and additional secretary in the home ministry, where he oversaw the left-wing extremism division among other responsibilities.
Born in Punjab, Gauba holds a degree in Physics from Patna University. He served as the chief secretary of Jharkhand for 15 months before transitioning back to the central government in 2016.”
