New Delhi : This statement follows a heated exchange between the BJP and opposition parties regarding the renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum to the Prime Minister’s Museum and Library. Criticizing the renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), Congress leader Jairam Ramesh asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot erase the significant contributions of Jawaharlal Nehru to India’s struggle for freedom.
Taking to his official account on the platform formerly known as Twitter, Ramesh posted, “Today, an iconic institution receives a new name. The globally acclaimed Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) is now PMML—Prime Ministers’ Memorial Museum and Library. Mr. Modi harbors various fears, complexes, and insecurities, particularly when it concerns our first and longest-serving Prime Minister. His agenda consistently involves denying, distorting, defaming, and dismantling Nehru and the Nehruvian legacy.”
The renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) to the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library (PMML) was officially carried out by the Central government on Monday.
Meanwhile, A Surya Prakash, Vice Chairman of the Executive Council of PMML, stated on Wednesday that the new museum highlights Jawaharlal Nehru’s accomplishments and contributions to the nation. He encouraged skeptics to visit the museum and witness this firsthand. “Visitors to the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) can observe how we have showcased Nehru’s endeavors, such as the temples of modern India, the Hirakud Dam, Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, his vision for establishing institutes of technology, and the Planning Commission during his 17-year term as Prime Minister at the Teen Murti Bhavan,” he explained.
Responding to Jairam Ramesh’s comments about Nehru’s contributions during the freedom struggle, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad emphasized that the Congress party only focuses on Jawaharlal Nehru and his family. He pointed out the contrast between the Congress’s perspective and that of Jairam Ramesh and PM Narendra Modi. “The Congress believes that only Nehru ji and the family are important. Narendra Modi has given due respect to all the Prime Ministers of the country in the museum,” he stated.
Earlier in mid-June, a special meeting of the NMML Society led to the decision to change its name to PMML Society.
The Ministry of Culture announced its resolution to alter the name of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society to the Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society.
This decision was made during a special meeting of the Memorial Museum and Library Society, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who serves as the Vice-President of the Society.
