New Delhi, September 6: The Congress party has confirmed its participation in the upcoming special session of Parliament, with Sonia Gandhi set to write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to request the agenda and highlight critical concerns.
Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress’ Parliamentary Party, convened a meeting on Tuesday with the party’s Parliamentary strategy group. According to party sources, the Congress intends to actively engage in the special session, scheduled to run from September 18 to September 22, rather than boycotting it.
During the meeting of the Parliamentary strategy group, party MPs, including Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, reached a consensus to attend the special session with a constructive agenda. Additionally, Sonia Gandhi plans to send a letter to the Prime Minister in the coming days to convey the Opposition’s requests for discussions on various pressing issues.
The decision for Sonia Gandhi to correspond with PM Modi received unanimous support from leaders of the INDIA bloc in Parliament. These leaders met at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence to strategize for the five-day special session.
This development comes after the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) articulated its intention to raise topics such as the Adani Group, the demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), inflation, unemployment, the situation in Manipur, and economic, political, and foreign affairs during the session commencing on September 18.
Furthermore, during a dinner meeting of floor leaders at Kharge’s residence on Tuesday, discussions also revolved around attempts by government officials and ministers to use “Bharat” instead of “India.” This issue emerged following a controversy over a G20 dinner invitation that referred to Droupadi Murmu as the President of “Bharat” instead of “India.”
Party sources reiterated that INDIA-based parties would oppose any initiative to remove “India” from the Constitution.
