New Delhi, Sep 6 : Heads of State and other world leaders set to attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi will dine in grandeur, thanks to bespoke silverware adorned with intricately engraved motifs inspired by India’s rich cultural heritage. Iris Jaipur, a metalware firm based in Jaipur, unveiled a preview of their exquisite silverware collection, commissioned by luxury hotels for foreign guests during their stay and for lavish summit dinners and luncheons. Crafted by 200 artisans from Jaipur, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and other parts of India, these silverware pieces, totaling around 15,000, reflect meticulous detailing, beaded borders, and a fusion of semi-machined hand craftsmanship with contemporary casting techniques.
Laksh Pabuwal, of Iris Jaipur, explained that most of the tableware has a steel or brass base with an elegant silver coating, while some items, like the glasses’ carrying plates for welcome drinks, feature gold plating. The company revealed that approximately 50,000 man-hours were invested in creating these exquisite pieces, which bridge tradition and modern aesthetics to become the centerpiece of the G20 Summit.
Rajeev Pabuwal, co-owner of the metalware firm, emphasized that these designs pay homage to India’s rich heritage and global significance. They showcase motifs of flowers, peacocks, and the national animal, enhancing the cultural sparkle that the silverware will bring to the event. Additionally, the silver-plated items, known for their hygienic qualities, have been used traditionally, including by Maharajas in ancient times.
The G20 Leaders’ Summit will take place at the newly-constructed international convention and exhibition center, Bharat Mandapam, at Pragati Maidan. These Indian-made silverware pieces not only promote ‘Make in India’ but also symbolize a fusion of craftsmanship and modern design. Special silverware has even been crafted to hold garlands and other items used for welcoming VVIP guests. Rajeev Pabuwal noted that such silverware has been created for various significant events in the past, emphasizing the company’s commitment to showcasing Indian craftsmanship on the global stage.
