Srinagar, October 7: The Srinagar weather office has issued a forecast for rain and snowfall in the Kashmir mountains beginning on Monday, attributing it to the swift movement of a Western Disturbance. This weather disturbance is expected to be of short duration, with conditions clearing up by Wednesday.
The meteorological department (MeT) anticipates precipitation in the higher reaches starting from Monday. According to the MeT, “Rain/snowfall over higher reaches is likely at scattered locations in Jammu and Kashmir during the evening/night of October 9, with the main activity occurring on October 10 (70-80% chance).”
Independent weather forecasters have indicated that snowfall is expected in certain higher areas, including Zojila, Mughal Road, Sinthan Top, various parts of the Pir Panjal Range, and the elevated regions of Gurez, Baramulla, Anantnag, and Kupwara districts. However, they clarified that snowfall is not expected in the plains.
The MeT has further stated that after two days of wet weather, predominantly dry conditions are expected from October 14 to 20. Although the MeT mentioned that there is a possibility of a brief spell of rain/snowfall in higher reaches, the chances are relatively low.
This year, Kashmir has experienced an extended period of dry weather and above-average temperatures, resulting in reduced water levels in the Jhelum River and other bodies of water. On September 25, rain ended the dry spell in Kashmir, with upper regions, including the popular ski resort of Gulmarg, receiving the first snowfall of the season.
