Washington DC, October 19: Following his trip to Israel, US President Joe Biden addressed the situation in the region, emphasizing the need for Israel to explore opportunities to alleviate the suffering of people in Gaza who have limited options. He stated, “Israel has been badly victimized. But the truth is that if they have an opportunity to relieve the suffering of people who have nowhere to go, it’s what they should do. And if they don’t, they’ll be held accountable in ways that may be unfair.”
The President further underlined the importance of providing humanitarian assistance to Gaza and mentioned that the US has requested substantial aid for the people of Gaza while also offering defense military assistance to Israel. He pointed out that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi agreed to open the Rafah gate to allow the passage of up to 20 trucks of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Biden’s remarks are aligned with efforts to promote international cooperation in delivering aid to Gaza, prevent further escalation of the conflict, and establish conditions for a durable and lasting peace in the Middle East.
During his return from Israel, President Biden addressed the possibility of Israeli forces launching a ground invasion of Gaza. While discussing this issue, he expressed hope for the safe return of Americans in Gaza and the importance of continuing efforts to bring them home.
The President found Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be receptive to the argument for humanitarian aid. Biden’s visit to Israel took place in the aftermath of a terrorist attack by Hamas, which resulted in Israel considering retaliatory actions in response.
