Srinagar, October 20: Pashmina represents more than just a word; it embodies the cultural identity of Jammu and Kashmir. Lieutenant Governor (LG) Manoj Sinha emphasized the administration’s duty to revive this iconic industry during an event held in Srinagar on Friday. The occasion marked the presentation of the annual artisan awards to Pashmina and Sozni weavers, organized by the Pashmina Exporter and Manufacturers Association (PEMA).
LG Sinha underlined the global significance of Pashmina, asserting that it stands as the cultural identity of not only Jammu and Kashmir but the entire world. This exceptional and invaluable product has been a cornerstone of the region’s economy for centuries, contributing significantly to nation-building. Kashmir is rightfully celebrated as the Pashmina capital of the world, he added.
While acknowledging the sector’s challenges, LG Sinha affirmed the administration’s commitment to rejuvenate the Pashmina industry in Jammu and Kashmir. He assured that comprehensive support, encompassing training, technology, infrastructure, and financial assistance, would be extended to the skilled artisans.
Addressing the issues faced by Pashmina goat herders due to climate change, Sinha highlighted the steps taken by the administration to address this crisis scientifically.
The LG disclosed that approximately 3.5 lakh artisans in the union territory are currently registered with the Handloom and Handicrafts Department. Of these, around 76,000 artisans are directly associated with Pashmina, and 55,000 are engaged in carpet-weaving craft. Recognizing that many artisans remain unregistered, a program has been initiated to ensure they benefit from government schemes.
Sinha also mentioned the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, which is set to transform the lives of artisans and craftsmen in 18 designated trades. The Jammu and Kashmir administration is committed to expanding the number of stalls and shops during exhibitions at Pragati Maidan, providing artisans with enhanced marketing opportunities and access to the global market.
