New Delhi, Apr 18 : The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Delhi government in response to a plea filed by Brinda Karat, a leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), seeking the registration of FIRs against Union Minister Anurag Thakur and BJP MP Parvesh Singh Verma for their alleged hate speech during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests and Delhi riots in 2020. The bench, comprising of Justice KM Joseph and Justice BV Nagarathna, observed that the reasoning of the lower courts that sanction under Section 196 of the Criminal Procedure Code was required may not be correct. The High Court had earlier rejected the plea of Karat and KM Tiwari, who had moved the court challenging a trial court decision that had refused to order the registration of FIRs against the two BJP leaders. The speeches by the two leaders were made during the Delhi assembly elections in 2020, and the police’s status report had found no cognisable offence had been made out.
