Jammu, July 27 : In a significant development, authorities granted permission for the 8th Muharram procession to pass through its traditional route on Thursday after a hiatus of over three decades. The procession, which is being conducted from Shaheed Gunj to Dalgate, had been restricted since 1989 due to prevailing law and order situations.
The administration allocated a two-hour time slot, from 6 am to 8 am, for the procession and made thorough security arrangements to ensure a peaceful event. Addressing the matter, Divisional Commissioner (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar Bidhuri explained that the decision considered the convenience of people, especially due to the heavy traffic on the route on a working day.
A day before the procession, a high-level meeting chaired by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Kashmir Zone Vijay Kumar took place to discuss various arrangements for Muharram. Topics covered included personnel deployment, technological enhancements, crowd management, preventing untoward incidents, maintaining a peaceful environment, and traffic management. The use of drones for crowd monitoring was also suggested to the SSP Srinagar.
ADGP Kashmir urged all citizens to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and cooperate with the authorities to ensure a safe and secure Muharram for everyone.
Muharram holds profound religious significance among Muslims as the first month of the Islamic calendar.
