New Delhi, May 6 (PTI): D K Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress chief, exuded confidence that the party would secure more than 140 seats in the upcoming assembly polls on May 10. In an interview with PTI, Shivakumar emphasized his commitment to abide by the party’s decision on the issue of chief ministership, highlighting the importance of party unity and the collective decision-making process.
Expressing optimism about the Congress’ electoral prospects, Shivakumar stated that a resounding victory in Karnataka would not only provide a comfortable majority but also pave the way for success in the subsequent Lok Sabha elections. Reflecting on the BJP’s manifesto, Shivakumar criticized their focus on issues such as the Uniform Civil Code and National Register of Citizens, labeling it a sign of the BJP’s lack of innovative ideas and vision for the state.
Dismissive of the “Modi factor,” Shivakumar claimed that the BJP’s attempts to divide society through inflammatory speeches would not resonate with the people of Karnataka. He emphasized that the state’s electorate has grown disillusioned with the BJP due to its alleged failures in addressing unemployment, corruption, and inflation.
When questioned about the Congress manifesto’s mention of decisive action as per law, including potential bans on organizations such as PFI and Bajrang Dal, Shivakumar accused the BJP of attempting to create divisions within society. He highlighted the Congress’ commitment to progressive and development-focused agendas, including initiatives such as providing financial support to women heads of households and unemployed graduates.
Confident in the Congress’ prospects, Shivakumar projected a victory of 141 seats for the party, leading to the formation of a government with a comfortable majority. He predicted a significant reduction in the BJP’s seat count to less than 60.
Looking beyond the state elections, Shivakumar emphasized that the message sent through the Karnataka polls would have implications for the 2024 general election. He drew parallels to historical instances when Karnataka played a pivotal role in shaping national politics, expressing his belief that the Congress would form both the state government in 2023 and the national government in 2024.
The voting for the 224 assembly seats in Karnataka is scheduled for May 10, with the results expected on May 13.
