New Delhi, October 4: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) overseeing Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, emphasized the significance of the “Green Economy” as a pivotal addition to India’s future growth and startup opportunities during an exclusive interview at the “Green Ribbon Champions” Conclave.
Dr. Jitendra Singh stressed the importance of early industry involvement in startups and research and development endeavors. He noted that “Green Financing” with robust industrial engagement is essential right from the outset, as without it, progress beyond a certain point becomes challenging.
He further highlighted the promising prospects of the bioeconomy, pointing out that in 2014, India’s bioeconomy was valued at approximately $10 billion, and it has since surged to $80 billion in just 8 to 9 years. He expressed optimism about reaching a bioeconomy valuation of $125 billion by 2025.
Dr. Jitendra Singh also discussed the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (NRF), introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which is set to tap into substantial non-governmental resources. This initiative aims to dissolve the demarcation between the public and private sectors, fostering greater synergy for future growth. The NRF will serve as a think tank, guiding the selection of research themes, project funding, and international collaborations while maintaining a scientific approach to innovation.
The Anusandhan NRF Act, recently passed by the Parliament during the Monsoon session, boasts a budget of Rs. 50,000 crore over five years. It will stimulate research and innovation across India’s universities, colleges, research institutions, and R&D laboratories, further advancing clean energy research and Mission Innovation. Approximately 70% of its funding will come from non-governmental sources.
Dr. Jitendra Singh also commended the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020, initiated by Prime Minister Modi, which offers students the flexibility to switch between different streams of higher education based on their aptitude. This approach aims to reduce the constraints imposed by rigid career aspirations, allowing individuals to explore diverse career opportunities over time and enhancing their mental well-being.
NEP-2020’s provision of multiple entry/exit options aligns with the objective of separating degrees from education, offering academic flexibility that empowers students to pursue various career paths according to their evolving learning and innate capabilities.
