New Delhi, October 9: The Election Commission announced on Monday that assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be conducted at an appropriate time, taking into consideration the prevailing security situation in the region. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar made this statement during a press conference where he unveiled the election schedule for five states.
CEC Rajiv Kumar emphasized that the elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held when the Election Commission deems it suitable, considering the security conditions in the union territory and the concurrent polls in the area.
Responding to another query, Kumar commented on the practice of making announcements regarding freebies, noting that such announcements often carry a populist appeal. He added that the public has the right to be informed about the funding sources for these promised freebies.
The Election Commission also revealed the election dates for five states, namely Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram. These states will conduct elections on various dates between November 7 and November 30. The counting of votes for all five states will take place on December 3, setting the stage for the semi-finals of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
These upcoming assembly elections will mark the final round of state-level elections before the Lok Sabha polls scheduled for the following year.
