Ladakh, July 21 : In Ladakh, heavy rains have triggered flash floods, severely damaging the Leh-Nubra road, leaving several tourists stranded. Public property in some villages has also been affected. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has been working tirelessly to restore the damaged road links, but landslides and debris on the Tangtse-Changla road have caused a major traffic jam, further adding to the tourists’ predicament.
The flash floods coincided with the commencement of a three-day sermon by the Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama, at the Jivetsal teaching ground in Leh. Despite the crisis, hundreds of devotees gathered to listen to his teachings on “37 practices of all the Bodhisattvas” by Gyalse Tokme Zangpo.
Ladakh’s Member of Parliament, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, took to Twitter to report the damage caused by heavy rainfall in Khardong, Khalsar villages, and Tia Nallah, urging swift action and the deployment of assessment and restoration teams.
LAHDC Councillor of Chushul, Konchok Stanzin, expressed gratitude to the BRO and Leh Police for their prompt response in handling the heavy traffic jam caused by debris on the Tangtse-Changla road.
The flash floods in Ladakh have become more frequent as summer progresses, leading to snowmelt. The region is a popular tourist destination, with the Nubra valley and the Changla Pass attracting numerous visitors.
Despite the challenging situation, the people of Ladakh are working together to address the aftermath of the flash floods and ensure the safety of both tourists and residents.
