Chandigarh, October 17: Former Congress legislator Kulbir Singh Zira was taken into custody at his Ferozepur residence in the early hours of Tuesday. He faces charges of obstructing an officer from carrying out his duties, which stemmed from an incident a few days ago, according to officials.
A significant number of Zira’s supporters gathered at the local police station and voiced their dissent against the AAP government in the wake of his arrest. Kulbir Singh Zira, who serves as the district unit chief for the Congress, was apprehended following a complaint filed by a block development panchayat officer. The complaint accused the leader and his supporters of hindering the officer and other staff from fulfilling their duties during a recent protest.
Punjab Congress Chief, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, strongly criticized the AAP government for apprehending Zira. In a statement on social media, Warring highlighted that the case was registered against Zira for organizing a protest against government officials who were allegedly failing to carry out their duties.
Warring stated, “The AAP’s Punjab government aimed to silence our dissenting voice. We will not remain silent and intend to stage a massive protest against this retaliatory action.”
The arrest of Kulbir Singh Zira has sparked political tensions in the region, underscoring the ongoing friction between the Congress and the AAP in Punjab. It remains to be seen how this situation will develop and impact the political landscape in the state.
