Srinagar, October 5th: The health department in Kashmir is making determined efforts to combat the widespread use of tobacco in public places, and in 2023, it has successfully collected fines amounting to over 1.5 lakh rupees from violators, as reported by Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Rather, the Director of Health Kashmir. Speaking at a one-day Media sensitization workshop under the national tobacco control program, Dr. Rather emphasized that creating a tobacco-free environment is not just a legal obligation but also a critical public health necessity. He stressed the vital role of public support in achieving this objective.
Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad Rather underscored the importance of garnering public support in the battle against tobacco use. He pointed out that any program or initiative against such a pervasive issue can only truly succeed with active public participation. The significant fines collected serve as a testament to the willingness of residents to adhere to tobacco control regulations.
Furthermore, Dr. Rather highlighted that the fight against smoking extends beyond public spaces and into private homes. Smoking within domestic environments can have adverse effects, especially on children and elderly family members. He referred to a recent collaborative study with the Social Welfare Department, which revealed that out of 70,000 individuals surveyed, 50,000 were found to be users of intravenous drugs.
These alarming findings indicated that a substantial number of drug users had a history of tobacco use, including minors. Dr. Rather emphasized the interconnectedness of tobacco use and substance abuse, advocating for a comprehensive approach to address both issues.
In response to the growing concern of substance abuse, particularly among youth, Dr. Rather mentioned that additional treatment facilities (ATF) centers have been established in every district of the valley. These centers are designed to provide essential support and intervention to those in need, offering a holistic approach to combat addiction and promote healthier lifestyles.
