New Delhi, Apr 27 : The Indian Army has established new specialist units to counter the increasing cyber threats from China and Pakistan. The decision was made during the Army Commanders Conference in the third week of this month, led by Army Chief Gen Manoj Pande. The Command Cyber Operations and Support Wings (CCOSW) are being raised to safeguard communication networks and increase preparedness levels in this niche domain. Cyberspace has become a critical component of the military domain, and the Indian Army is rapidly moving towards net centricity, which involves a heightened reliance on modern communication systems at all levels.
The expansion of cyber warfare capabilities by adversaries has made the cyber domain more competitive and contested, highlighting the importance and requirement of such specialist units. The CCOSW organizations will assist the formations in undertaking the mandated cyber security functions to strengthen the cyber security posture of the Indian Army. The Army has taken multiple steps to counter the aggression of adversaries in the form of virtual honey trapping and hacking in recent years. The Defence Cyber Agency is working at the tri-services level to address these issues.
