Ladakh, June 16 : On Friday, work commenced on the highly significant Chusul-Dungti-Fukche-Demchok Road, aimed at establishing a robust road network along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in eastern Ladakh. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) shared images of a groundbreaking ceremony conducted to mark the initiation of the project, emphasizing its strategic importance.
Spanning approximately 135 kilometers, the construction of this road will facilitate smooth troop movement toward the LAC. The esteemed Project Himank, led by Colonel Ponung Doming, has been entrusted with the execution of this vital endeavor. Colonel Ponung Doming holds the distinction of being the first woman officer appointed as the Task Force Commander at an altitude exceeding 15,000 feet. The project represents one of the many strategic roads currently being constructed by the BRO.
Notably, the Demchok sector is situated near the convergence of the Charding Nullah and Indus River. Chushul, located in the Leh district of Ladakh, lies south of Pangong Lake and west of Spanggur Lake in the Durbuk tehsil. The LAC with China is positioned approximately 5 kilometers east of Chushul, traversing the Chushul Valley.
Colonel Ponung Doming hails from Passighat in the East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Her appointment as the Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) commander at an elevation of 15,000 feet, the highest outpost for border roads globally, fills her home state with immense pride.
