Srinagar, June 22: Despite the forecast for hot and humid weather, the night temperatures in most places in Jammu and Kashmir settled above normal, according to officials. The meteorological department reported that Srinagar recorded a low of 20.5°C, surpassing the previous night’s temperature of 19.7°C, marking an above-normal deviation of 4.79°C for the summer capital.
Similarly, Qazigund recorded a low of 17.2°C, slightly below the previous night’s temperature of 17.4°C, but still above the normal by 2.9°C for the gateway town of Kashmir. Pahalgam, the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, recorded a low of 11.3°C, exceeding the previous night’s temperature of 10.6°C and deviating by 2.2°C above the normal.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at 17.4°C, higher than the previous night’s temperature of 16.5°C, resulting in an above-normal deviation of 3.3°C for the north Kashmir region. Kokernag recorded a low of 17.7°C, just below the previous night’s temperature of 18.0°C, but still 3.6°C above normal for the area.
Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, recorded a low of 13.5°C, slightly lower than the previous night’s temperature of 13.6°C but still above normal by 3.8°C. Jammu, the winter capital of J&K, recorded a low of 27.8°C, a decrease from the previous night’s temperature of 30.5°C, but still 4.7°C above normal.
Other regions in Jammu and Kashmir also experienced above-normal night temperatures, including Banihal, Batote, Katra, and Bhaderwah. Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded lows of 5.2°C and 13.4°C, respectively.
The forecast indicates mainly dry weather until June 23, with a possibility of brief showers and thunderstorms in one or two places towards late afternoon or evening. From June 24-28, generally cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate thundershowers at fairly widespread places has been predicted. Some areas in the Jammu Division may experience intense showers for a short period during this period.
