New Delhi, May 16 : The Jharkhand High Court has reserved its judgment in a defamation case filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The case revolves around alleged objectionable remarks made by Gandhi against BJP leader Amit Shah during a Congress party gathering in Chaibasa back in 2018.
During the court proceedings presided over by Justice Ambujnath, arguments from both sides were concluded. The court has instructed both parties to submit synopses of their arguments. The defamation suit was filed by a local BJP leader in response to Gandhi’s purported statement at the Congress meeting, where he allegedly remarked, “A murder accused can become a party president only in the BJP. It’s not possible in the Congress.”
Subsequently, Rahul Gandhi was served a notice by the lower court. However, this notice was challenged in the High Court with a plea to dismiss it. Advocates Piyush Chitresh and Dipankar Rai represented Rahul Gandhi in the case.
Earlier, on May 12, the High Court had extended the “no coercive action” order until May 16, providing temporary relief to Rahul Gandhi. The final verdict from the court is now awaited.
