Srinagar, May 23 – Union Minister Jitendra Singh emphasized the significance of hosting a G20 meeting in Srinagar, describing the city as a remarkable combination of traditional heritage and modern infrastructure equipped with cutting-edge technology.
During the inaugural session of the third tourism working group meeting of G20 countries at SKICC, Singh, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, expressed India’s readiness to shoulder global responsibilities towards the economy, environment, and society.
Singh underscored the global nature of India’s challenges, concerns, and growth, highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to addressing climate challenges and achieving a net-zero target by 2070.
Drawing attention to the unique characteristics of Srinagar, Singh mentioned its historical significance as a seat of learning in both Persian and Sanskrit, along with its diverse range of artistry and craftsmanship, such as carpets, embroidery, and shawls. He also highlighted the city’s advanced infrastructure projects, including the world’s highest railway bridge and Asia’s longest bi-directional road tunnel.
Union Tourism Minister G K Reddy, who also addressed the event, expressed satisfaction with the progress made by the tourism working groups and expressed confidence in achieving inclusive and action-oriented guidelines for the industry.
Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa, stated that the recommendations from the meeting would hold significant weight in the final leaders’ communiqué, to be issued after the leaders’ meeting in September. He emphasized the importance of tourism in driving economic growth and job creation.
Kant further noted that India’s presidency focused on green, inclusive, and resilient tourism development as a means of rebuilding the sector after the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The meeting in Srinagar offered delegates the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Kashmir, often referred to as “heaven on earth.” Kant praised the warmth and hospitality of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting their contribution to creating a successful tourism experience.
The working group meeting in Srinagar witnessed the highest number of delegates among all working groups, and the organizers expressed gratitude for their participation. Security measures were implemented in the city, including road closures and checkpoints, to ensure a safe and incident-free event.
India’s G20 presidency has thus far hosted 118 meetings, and Srinagar was lauded as an iconic tourist location with the hope of attracting a greater number of visitors, providing a much-needed boost to local traders and craftsmen dependent on tourism.
