Geneva [Switzerland], Oct 9: In his address during the 54th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), senior Kashmiri journalist and author Khalid Jehangir reiterated concerns about Pakistan’s continued support for cross-border terrorism in India’s Jammu and Kashmir. Jehangir, who also serves as the president of the International Centre for Peace Studies (ICPS), emphasized the impact of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism on the region.
He highlighted the findings from New Delhi’s annual report for 2022, which asserted Pakistan’s unwavering support for cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. This support has led to disruptions in trade and security dynamics in the region, including instances of infiltration and the illegal transportation of contraband across Kashmir’s borders.
Jehangir, representing the affected population of Jammu and Kashmir, stressed the profound human rights implications of Pakistan’s actions. He noted the aspirations of the indigenous population for peace and self-sovereignty, which have been hindered by Pakistan’s inclination toward violence. This has resulted in loss of life, broken families, and widespread fear among the local populace.
The journalist also expressed concern about the tactics employed by cross-border terrorists, which not only undermine human rights but also curtail free speech and expression. Journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens who express dissenting views often face intimidation and threats.
Jehangir called for a comprehensive review of Pakistan’s human rights landscape through the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process. He urged the international community to amplify the voices of the affected population and demand justice. He emphasized the need to create an environment in Jammu and Kashmir where the next generation can thrive without the specter of terror and where human rights are upheld.
On the sidelines of the Council meeting, Jehangir engaged with academicians, diplomats, and activists from various countries to update them on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and Pakistan’s efforts to create instability in the region.
