Kashmir, May 16 : Ganderbal District, renowned for its scenic beauty, witnessed a magnificent reception for the historic G20 event in Kashmir, as the social voluntary organization ‘Voice for Peace and Justice’ organized the “Pedal for Peace” cyclothon. More than 500 athletes from across the valley participated in this event, expressing their aspirations for peace and development in Kashmir. As G20 delegates arrived for the Y-20 event, the focus shifted to showcasing Kashmir’s traditional handicrafts and tourism sector on a global scale. The younger generation in Kashmir eagerly seeks increased employment opportunities and the promotion of sports to exhibit their talents at an international level.
“The aim of organizing this cyclothon was to celebrate the arrival of foreign delegates associated with the G20. This international event will significantly boost local traditional handicrafts, such as carpet and shawl weaving, and enhance Kashmir’s tourism sector globally, ultimately creating new employment prospects in the violence-affected region,” stated Farooq Ganderbali, the patron of Voice for Peace and Justice.
The cycle race, covering the Lar to Sher-i-Kashmir Park Manigam route on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway Bypass, passed through the Sambal-Manigam areas of Ganderbal district. It was divided into three categories: senior and junior men, along with an open age category for women. The opening and presentation ceremony witnessed the presence of renowned cyclist Dr. Mohammad Akbar Khan, who motivated participants and awarded cycles, trophies, cash prizes, and certificates to the top three positions in each category.
“The Kashmiri youth, who were once exploited in the name of religion and freedom, were made scapegoats and misled to graves. Now is the time for our talented youth to shine in Asian, Olympic, and other world championships,” added Farooq Ganderbali.
The organizers also pledged to provide better opportunities for athletes in the sports field in the near future, furthering the promotion of sports in the region. The “Pedal for Peace” cyclothon organized by VoPJ was a warm welcome to the G20 meeting in Srinagar, symbolizing support for the forum’s efforts towards sustainable economic growth and development in Jammu and Kashmir. With India holding the G20 presidency until November 2023, this event serves as an opportunity for the region to showcase its potential and foster peace and prosperity.
