JAMMU, July 19: Parts of Jammu and Kashmir experienced intense rainfall, with Katra receiving an unprecedented “extremely” heavy downpour of 315.4mm in 24 hours, marking the all-time highest recorded rainfall for the area, according to officials on Wednesday.
As per reports from the meteorological department, Katra’s rainfall of 315.4mm in 24 hours till 0830 hours this morning surpassed the previous record of 292.4mm set on 31st July 2019.
Other regions in Jammu and Kashmir also received substantial rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Jammu recording 109mm, Banihal 10mm, and Batote 15mm.
The meteorological department forecasted continued rainfall in the coming hours, with a subsequent decrease. From July 20-22, intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers were expected in “many places” of Jammu and scattered places of Kashmir. There was a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in some areas of the Jammu region during the week.
With heavy rain posing risks of flash floods, mudslides, and landslides, authorities advised people to exercise caution and avoid vulnerable spots, such as Streams and Rivers.
As a precautionary measure, all government and private schools in Doda and Ramban districts were closed for the safety and well-being of the students in light of the heavy rainfall. Deputy Commissioner Doda directed relevant authorities to inform students well in advance about the school closures to prevent them from venturing out. The Chief Education Officer Ramban urged heads of institutions to assist students in reaching their homes safely.
