Udhampur, May 4: A truck carrying livestock overturned and rolled down a gorge in Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday. According to reports, the incident occurred on the Udhampur-Jammu highway near Jakhani Bridge. While the truck was completely damaged, no human casualties have been reported so far.
The truck was reportedly transporting around 30 sheep and goats from Ramban district to Jammu when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled down the gorge. Local residents rushed to the spot to help rescue the animals, and the police and animal welfare organizations were also informed.
The animal welfare organizations, along with the locals, managed to rescue most of the livestock, while a few animals died in the accident. The injured animals were taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment.
The incident caused a brief traffic jam on the highway, but the authorities cleared the road soon after. The police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the accident.
Overloading and reckless driving are often cited as the main reasons for road accidents in the region, which has hilly terrain and narrow roads. The authorities have been taking measures to improve road safety and prevent accidents, but incidents like these continue to occur.
