J&k , July 05 : Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the significance of the Kashmiri language as the true representation of their identity. Speaking at the release function of Dr Gazanfar Ali Gazal’s book, ‘Qatraen Huend Shahar,’ held at Tagore Hall in Srinagar, Mufti expressed concern over the endangered status of their mother tongue. She stressed that the Kashmiri language had historically served as a powerful tool in their battles, but its current vulnerability was hindering open communication.
During the event, Mufti lamented the younger generation’s lack of interest in preserving their native language, noting that even her own children were not proficient in it. She urged people to recognize the importance of both Urdu and Kashmiri as their official and mother languages, emphasizing their role in defining their collective identity.
Recently, on Monday, Mufti welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to hear petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories. In a tweet, she expressed hope that justice would prevail and cited the court’s previous ruling, which stated that the revocation of Article 370 could only occur upon the recommendation of the Jammu and Kashmir constituent assembly.
A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear these petitions on July 11, addressing the concerns surrounding the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of Jammu and Kashmir into separate Union territories.
