SRINAGAR, Aug 5: Former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mehbooba Mufti, along with several senior party leaders, were placed under house arrest in Srinagar on the fourth anniversary of Article 370 abrogation. Mehbooba Mufti took to Twitter to express her concerns, stating that the house arrest followed a midnight crackdown where numerous party members were illegally detained in police stations.
Meanwhile, the BJP is organizing several programs in Srinagar to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the Article 370 abrogation. Giant hoardings calling for Kashmiris to ‘celebrate’ the abrogation have been displayed across the city. However, Mehbooba Mufti criticized this celebration, citing the use of brute force to suppress the genuine sentiments of the people.
Furthermore, the Srinagar administration denied the PDP permission to hold an event on the Article 370 abrogation anniversary, and the party’s headquarters in Srinagar were sealed. Mehbooba Mufti also shared a video showing the detention of PDP leader Arif Laigroo by the J&K Police. The PDP expressed hope that the Supreme Court would take cognizance of these developments, considering that Article 370 has come up for hearing.
