Srinagar, July 8: Jammu and Kashmir witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall, resulting in a drop in temperature, with the meteorological department predicting further showers until July 9. According to an official from the department, Srinagar received 20 mm of rainfall, Qazigund 94 mm, Pahalgam 73.3 mm, Kupwara 17.3 mm, Kokernag 76.3 mm, Gulmarg 42.4 mm, Jammu 12.0 mm, Banihal 103.8 mm, Batote 16.4 mm, Katra 16.6 mm, and Bhaderwah 6.0 mm in the last 24 hours until 8:30 am today.
The official stated, “Widespread moderate to heavy rain with thundershowers/lightning is expected in Jammu and Kashmir till July 9. Some places in Jammu Division may receive heavy to very heavy rain, while heavy rain is likely in certain areas of Kashmir Division during this period, gradually decreasing thereafter.”
The meteorological department also warned about the potential impacts of the weather system, including possible disruptions to the ongoing Sri Amarnathji Yatra pilgrimage, a rise in water levels in rivers and local streams leading to flash floods and waterlogging. The department cautioned about the increased risk of landslides, shooting stones, and mudslides in vulnerable areas, which may disrupt surface transportation on the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, Zojila Pass, and other major hilly roads. Additionally, a sharp dip in day temperatures was anticipated.
Regarding minimum temperatures, Srinagar recorded a low of 14.9°C, Qazigund 14.6°C, Pahalgam 10.8°C, Kupwara 13.2°C, and Kokernag 13.2°C. Gulmarg registered a low of 7.8°C, while Jammu recorded 24.6°C. Banihal, Batote, Katra, and Bhaderwah recorded lows of 14.4°C, 16.7°C, 20.2°C, and 17.1°C, respectively.
