New Delhi, June 23 : Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made efforts to address concerns among US lawmakers regarding India’s stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During his address to a joint session of the US Congress, Modi reiterated his message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the need for dialogue and diplomacy instead of war. The Prime Minister’s assurance garnered a standing ovation, indicating the Congress members’ desire to hear a clear stance from India on the matter.
Another point of concern for US lawmakers was India’s commitment to democracy. Over 70 lawmakers had written a joint letter to US President Joe Biden, urging him to raise issues related to democracy, religious freedom, and press freedom during discussions with Modi. Addressing this concern, Modi spoke at length about India’s dedication to democracy, highlighting its core principles of equality, dignity, and the promotion of debate and discourse.
During his address, Modi also referred to the historical context of Indian independence, grouping the rule of the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughals, and the British Empire together as “thousand years of foreign rule.” This landmark speech marked Modi’s second appearance before a joint session of the US Congress, a privilege he called “exceptional.”
Modi’s remarks on the Russian invasion were met with applause from lawmakers as he stressed the importance of upholding the principles of the UN Charter, peaceful dispute resolution, and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized that the current global order should prioritize dialogue and diplomacy to prevent further bloodshed and human suffering.
The concerns regarding democracy in India were also acknowledged by the Prime Minister, who described democracy as a sacred and shared value that supports equality, dignity, and open debate. He asserted that India, with its rich democratic heritage, stands as the “mother of democracy.” Modi’s address received enthusiastic support from the floor, with chants of “Modi, Modi,” and concluding with patriotic slogans of “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”
While the US Congress has provided substantial defense supplies to Ukraine, some lawmakers have raised questions about the expenses involved. Nevertheless, the Congress as a whole remains committed to assisting Ukraine for as long as needed, as stated by President Biden. Modi’s address aimed to alleviate concerns in this regard and emphasize the importance of maintaining democracy, religious freedom, and press freedom in India.
