New Delhi, July 28: Parliament’s Monsoon Session enters its seventh day with the prospect of stormy sessions as the Treasury and Opposition clash over the situation in violence-stricken Manipur. The Opposition, represented by the grand alliance I.N.D.I.A, is determined to prioritize discussions on the Manipur issue, demanding that all listed businesses be set aside for this purpose. They also insist on a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the situation in the Northeastern state.
Amid heated exchanges, the Opposition will likely push for a date to vote on the previously filed no-confidence motion against the Centre. On the previous day, both Houses witnessed turbulent scenes as the debate on the motion sparked heated debates, with most Opposition members dressing in black as a protest against the alleged denial of discussions on Manipur and the postponement of the no-confidence motion debate.
The Rajya Sabha saw disruptions, with members raising slogans and interrupting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s statement on foreign policy. The Treasury benches countered with pro-Modi slogans, leading to multiple adjournments.
Despite the disruptions, some legislative business progressed. The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was passed in the Rajya Sabha, while the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2023, was passed in the Lok Sabha amidst Opposition sloganeering over the Manipur issue.
Ahead of the seventh day of the session, several Opposition leaders moved notices in both Houses, seeking debates on the Manipur situation. In the Rajya Sabha, birthday greetings will be extended to BJP MP Dineshchandra Jemalbhai Anavadiya.
During the session, reports related to the representation of OBCs in various employment sectors are expected to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha. Apna Dal MP Anupriya Singh Patel is scheduled to deliver a statement on the implementation of recommendations from the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce.
The ongoing Monsoon Session remains tense and critical as the Opposition continues to press for discussions on key issues while the Treasury seeks to move ahead with legislative proceedings.
