New Delhi, July 24: Opposition parties have intensified their attack on the Centre in Parliament during the ongoing Monsoon session, seeking discussions on the situation in Manipur, which has caused disruptions since the session commenced. Congress, AAP, RJD, CPI, DMK, and other party MPs have moved Suspension of Business Notices in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha under Rule 267, demanding discussions on the violence-hit state.
Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan’s notice in Rajya Sabha calls for a discussion on the “persistent failure of both the Union and Manipur Government in resolving the issues and facilitating the peace process and grave matter of atrocities against women resulting from the ongoing violence in Manipur.” Additionally, MPs from various opposition parties have also given Suspension of Business Notices in the Upper House to discuss the Manipur situation.
Earlier in the day, Congress Lok Sabha MPs Manickam Tagore and Manish Tewari proposed adjournment motion notices, seeking discussions on the northeastern state’s situation, with Tewari asking to suspend Zero Hour, Question Hour, and other businesses of the day for the discussion on “ongoing ethnic clashes.”
The Monsoon session began on July 20 amidst chaos over the Manipur violence, with the opposition demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statements on the issue within the House. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur accused the opposition of avoiding discussions and running away from the proceedings of the Parliament.
In response to the opposition parties’ alliance, Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), holding a protest in Parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also planned a protest over atrocities against women in Rajasthan, West Bengal, and other states.
While Manipur’s recent video incident has outraged the nation, another incident of two tribal women being stripped naked, tortured, and beaten up emerged in West Bengal, sparking a war of words between BJP and the Trinamool Congress.
The opposition continues to demand a discussion on the Manipur violence and the viral video showing the torture of women, leading to disruptions in Parliament’s proceedings.
Floor leaders of the I.N.D.I.A. alliance are expected to meet at the office of the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, to strategize for the House floor. The Manipur situation has dominated the second day of the Monsoon Session, with the opposition pressing the Centre to address the issue. Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha faced adjournment for the day due to the Manipur issue as the opposition rejected the government’s proposal for a short-duration discussion on Thursday and Friday.
