New Delhi : On Thursday, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned until 2 pm as a deadlock persisted over the Opposition’s request for a discussion under Rule 167 concerning the Manipur violence and comments made by Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge regarding the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the debate.
Kharge appealed to the chair to permit a discussion on the Manipur issue using Rule 167 and insisted on the participation of PM Modi. This led to objections from ruling members, prompting Kharge to criticize their stance.
He remarked, “Pradhan Mantri ke aane se kya hone wala hai, kya parmatma hai woh? Yeh koi bhagwan nahi hai (What will happen if PM Modi comes, is he God. He is not God).”
Amid the impasse, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha adjourned the session until 2 pm.
Earlier, the House witnessed exchanges between opposition and treasury benches, each accusing the other of causing the deadlock over the discussion about the Manipur situation.
Notices for discussing the Manipur situation under Rule 267 were rejected by the Chairman. He addressed both sides, noting their inflexible positions, and inquired whether a common ground could be reached. He sought the opinions of Kharge and the Leader of the House, Piyush Goyal.
The Rajya Sabha has been grappling with a deadlock due to the opposition’s request for a discussion on the Manipur issue under Rule 267 and the insistence on PM Modi’s participation. The government expressed its willingness for an extensive discussion under Rule 176.
