New Delhi, July 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the ongoing violence in Manipur, expressing deep concern over the disturbing incident that occurred in the state. A video depicting the heinous act of two women being paraded naked in Manipur has triggered nationwide outrage.
PM Modi declared, “I am filled with pain, and this incident is a shameful blot on any civil society.” He assured the nation that no accused individuals involved in the incident will be spared, and they will face severe consequences for their actions.
As the Monsoon session of Parliament begins, PM Modi urged all chief ministers to prioritize and strengthen law and order in their respective states. He emphasized that the issue of a woman’s honor transcends political boundaries and should be treated with utmost seriousness and sensitivity.
In response to the situation in Manipur, several opposition MPs have demanded discussions on the matter. Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh sought a discussion on the Manipur violence in Rajya Sabha, while Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and AIMIM’s Asaduddin Owaisi moved adjournment motions in Lok Sabha. Other MPs from various parties also gave suspension of Business Notices in both houses to discuss the Manipur situation.
The opposition parties are adamant that the discussion should occur in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the Centre has requested social media platforms, including Twitter, to remove the video of the incident as it is currently under investigation.
The violence in Manipur stems from protests by the Kuki and Naga communities against a High Court order that requested the state government to consider granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Meitei community. Only STs are allowed to purchase land in hilly areas, and the Meitei community sought this status due to their increasing population and land requirements.
The monsoon session of Parliament, which will continue until August 11, has an extensive legislative agenda, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023, and a total of 31 bills.
The situation in Manipur remains tense, and the government is taking necessary steps to address the issue and restore peace in the region.
