New Delhi , May 22 : In an effort to enhance India’s partnerships with Pacific Island countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a comprehensive 12-step program during the 3rd India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit held in Papua New Guinea. The program aims to fulfill the developmental aspirations of the region’s people while consolidating a shared vision of a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.
During the summit, PM Modi unveiled the key initiatives, which include the establishment of a new 100-bed regional super specialty hospital in Fiji and the creation of a Regional IT and Cyber Security Training Hub in Papua New Guinea. Additionally, the program encompasses various initiatives such as the Sagar Amrut Scholarships, Jaipur Foot Camps, FIPIC SME Development Project, solar projects for government buildings, provision of desalination units for drinking water, supply of sea ambulances, establishment of dialysis units, setting up of 24×7 emergency helplines, Jan Aushadi Kendras (generic medicine stores), and Yoga centers.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Papua New Guinea marked his first tour to the country and the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to an Indo-Pacific nation. Upon his arrival, he was greeted with respect as the Indian national anthem played and received a guard of honor.
During the summit, PM Modi emphasized India’s belief in multilateralism and its support for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Following the summit, he held bilateral meetings with several leaders from Pacific-Indo countries, including the President of Palau, the Premier of Niue, the Prime Minister of Fiji, the Marshall Islands Minister, and the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).
