Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a significant state visit to the United States, emphasizing the deepening ties and unprecedented trust between the US and India, as highlighted in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. PM Modi sees this as India’s moment to secure its rightful place on the world stage amidst geopolitical turmoil.
In the interview, PM Modi stressed India’s desire for a higher profile and a more influential role in global politics and the world economy. He presented India as a natural leader of the global South, capable of voicing the long-neglected aspirations of developing nations. PM Modi called for reforms in international institutions, such as the United Nations, to ensure better representation for the world’s less affluent countries and address pressing issues like climate change and debt reduction.
When questioned about India’s aspiration to be a permanent member of the UN Security Council, PM Modi stated that an evaluation of the council’s current membership is necessary, adding that the world should be consulted on whether India deserves a place.
