New Delhi, May 19 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a three-nation visit, commencing with Japan, where he will attend the G7 Summit in Hiroshima. The visit will also include stops in Papua New Guinea and Australia.
India has been invited as a guest country for the G7 summit, with the discussions focused on various topics such as nuclear disarmament, economic resilience and security, regional issues, climate and energy, and food and health development. PM Modi is expected to engage in bilateral meetings, including one with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. In addition, he will unveil a bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima.
Due to the cancellation of the Quad meeting in Australia, PM Modi and other Quad leaders are now planning to have a meeting in Hiroshima. The Quad, consisting of India, Japan, Australia, and the United States, aims to address key regional and global challenges.
Expressing the significance of his presence at the G7 Summit as India holds the G20 Presidency this year, PM Modi stated that he looks forward to exchanging views with the G7 countries and other invited partners. He also expressed his eagerness to hold bilateral meetings with leaders attending the Hiroshima G7 Summit.
After Japan, PM Modi will travel to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, for the 3rd Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC III Summit). This visit marks the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Papua New Guinea. The FIPIC Summit will focus on sustainable development, climate change, healthcare, and other crucial subjects. PM Modi will also engage in bilateral interactions with Papua New Guinea’s Governor General, Prime Minister James Marape, and other Pacific Island Country (PIC) leaders.
Concluding the three-nation tour, PM Modi will visit Sydney, Australia, upon the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. He will hold talks with the Australian PM and interact with Indian CEOs and business leaders. Additionally, a special event in Sydney will provide an opportunity for PM Modi to engage with the vibrant Indian community.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that PM Modi’s visit presents an opportunity to engage with important partners in both multilateral and bilateral formats, strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering cooperation.
