New Delhi, July 28: Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Project Tiger, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted its remarkable success in conserving wildlife, leading to India now being home to 70% of the world’s tigers.
Addressing the G20 Environment and Climate Sustainability Ministerial Meeting in Chennai through a video message, PM Modi expressed pride in India’s conservation efforts and announced forthcoming initiatives, Project Lion and Project Dolphin.
“Inspired by the achievements of Project Tiger, India has launched the International Big Cat Alliance, dedicated to safeguarding the world’s seven major big cat species,” stated PM Modi, who inaugurated the alliance in April at Mysuru University in Karnataka during the “Commemoration of 50 years of Project Tiger.”
Speaking about India’s commitment to combating climate change, the Prime Minister asserted that the country has established itself as one of the top five nations globally in terms of installed renewable energy capacity. Additionally, India has set an ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. Collaboration with partners, such as the International Solar Alliance, CDRI, and the Leadership Group for Industry Transition, continues to strengthen India’s efforts in this direction.
Underlining India’s dedication to biodiversity conservation, PM Modi emphasized the nation’s consistent efforts in protecting and enriching its natural environment.
The meeting followed the conclusion of the two-day 4th Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) meeting, where significant progress was made, including the launch of the ‘Resource Efficiency-Circular Economy Industry Coalition.’ This coalition aims to unite nations, industries, and experts in promoting global circularity and resource efficiency, in line with India’s commitment to environmental sustainability during its G20 Presidency.
