Dras (Ladakh), Jul 26 : Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister, visited the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, on July 26. He paid heartfelt tributes to the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1999 war. Singh laid a wreath at the memorial and also visited the tombstones dedicated to the fallen heroes. As part of his visit, he had an interactive session with Army officers and jawans before heading back to New Delhi.
In 1999, the Indian Army launched a resolute counterassault against Pakistani forces that had surreptitiously occupied crucial heights in Ladakh. The day holds special significance as it marks India’s triumphant victory over Pakistan, and is observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas.
