JAMMU, Apr 10: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was blocked on Saturday due to shooting stones from a hillock in Ramban district. The highway is the only all-weather road linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country.
According to officials, the shooting stones started rolling down from the hillock near Kela Morh area of the district around 4 am, blocking the highway. The Traffic Control Room in Jammu has advised people not to undertake any journey on the highway until the debris is cleared.
The district administration has deployed heavy machinery to clear the debris and restore the highway for vehicular movement. However, the process is expected to take some time due to the large amount of debris that has accumulated on the highway.
The closure of the highway has left hundreds of vehicles stranded on either side of the blockade, causing inconvenience to commuters and travelers. The authorities have assured that they are doing their best to clear the debris as soon as possible.
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is a crucial lifeline for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as it is the only road link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country. The highway is prone to frequent landslides and shooting stones, especially during the winter season.
