The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to unveil the schedule for the forthcoming assembly elections in five states: Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana.
Scheduled for a press conference at 12 PM today, the ECI will disclose key details, including the polling dates, the number of phases involved, and the deadlines for filing and withdrawing nominations.
These upcoming assembly elections hold significant importance for major political parties, encompassing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the principal opposition Congress, and various regional parties. Notably, the Congress currently holds power in two of the five states—Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh—while the BJP governs Madhya Pradesh. Telangana is under the leadership of the KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samiti, and Mizoram is governed by the Mizo National Front (MNF).
The terms of the legislative assemblies in these five states are slated to expire between December 2023 and January 2024. Traditionally, the ECI announces the election schedule approximately six to eight weeks before the assembly’s term concludes.
EC sources indicate that Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, and Telangana are likely to conduct their elections in a single phase, as was the case in 2018. In contrast, Chhattisgarh may witness polling taking place in two phases, akin to the previous election in 2018.
