Mumbai, October 16 – In a historic decision, cricket has officially made its way back into the Summer Olympics after a 123-year hiatus. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where the sport will be played in the T20 format. Alongside cricket, the IOC has also greenlit the addition of four other sports: squash, baseball/softball, lacrosse, and flag football.
The proposal to introduce these five new sports to the program for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics was presented by the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 (@LA28) and received unanimous acceptance from the IOC Session. In the voting process, only two out of the 99 participating IOC members opposed the proposal.
IOC President Thomas Bach made the official announcement regarding the inclusion of cricket and the other sports following the recommendation of the Executive Board, which was approved through a show of hands. Bach warmly welcomed these sports to the Olympic program.
Cricket had previously been part of the Olympics only once, during the 1900 Paris Olympics, where England emerged victorious against France in a historic showdown. With its return, cricket enthusiasts can now look forward to witnessing the sport on the grand Olympic stage once more.
